The Veteran Housing Services Initiative provides a multi-layer approach to addressing the housing needs of low-to-moderate income veteran families. This initiative offers home-ownership opportunities to veterans that are first-time home-buyers, renovation funding for low income veteran homeowners and community outreach services to increase awareness of the health risks and negative impacts associated with poor housing conditions.
BAND, through its relationship with the National Community Stabilization Trust and the Bank of America Foundation, receives property donations in need of renovation. Upon completing renovation, BAND must sell the properties to low-to-moderate income veterans and provide down payment and closing cost assistance UP TO $40,000 to ensure affordability. All participating veterans must complete an 8 hour Homebuyer Education Workshop offered through a HUD approved counseling agency. Our Housing Counseling Partners are:
- Neighborhood Housing Service of South Florida (NHSSF) – (954) 564-4037
- Urban League of Broward County (ULBC) – (954) 584-0777
- Housing Foundation of America (HFA) – (954) 923-5001
Project 551 – Honoring Our Heroes
The Veterans Housing Services Initiative also seeks to assist veteran homeowners. Project 551 – Honoring Our Heroes will increase awareness of and address the negative effects that arise from a substandard living environment. This is accomplished through the collaborative efforts of Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust; Trust (will access veteran set aside funding through Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta), Stone of Hope OIF/OEF Military Outreach Center (Intake completion) and VFW South Broward Post 8195 (Outreach assistance) by providing deferred forgivable loans UP TO $15,000 for energy efficiency, weatherization handicap accessibility improvements and other improvements necessary to improve health and safety. Funds are awarded on a first come, first qualified, first served basis.
